INTRO:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

PROPAK is a huge annual exhibition tailored for the packaging, food processing, plastic, labeling and printing industry in West Africa. It seeks to bring visitors, exhibitors, sponsors, partners, stakeholders, speakers and enthusiasts together on a mutually beneficial platform to learn, interact and gain exposure to latest trends in the industry.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this 7th<\/sup>\nedition of the event and with heavy investment in solidifying current facility,\nit\u2019s clear the organizers of region\u2019s largest show has reinforced a foundation\nto take on more giants of the industry.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this post, I take\nyou through my story and a quick review attending PROPAK 2019.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

MY STORY<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The text message popped:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c200 Exhibitors, 5,000 visitors, 25 countries, 35 leading\nSpeakers. Visit Propak West Africa, the Leading Packaging Expo for Free!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enough to serve as an invite for a target like me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The date:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17-19 September 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t my first time at the exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had attended the previous year\u2019s \u2013though very briefly\nbecause of my tight schedule at the former printing and packaging firm I worked.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the background, I was working on (almost rounding off a\npublication design project for a client). My plan was to round off and ensure I\nattended, full throttle, with my family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had made plans to stay over on the Lagos-Island axis with\nmy sister for easy access to and fro event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a strategy of using one stone to kill two birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do I mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First stone was targeted at fulfilling a usual family\nreunion visit (permit me to put it that way) to my sister on the Island with my\nfamily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second stone?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019d guess as much:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To attend, full scale (all the days), in the Propak 2019\nexhibition at the Landmark Centre, Lekki, Lagos in Southwest Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(I just couldn\u2019t afford to miss it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, plans didn\u2019t turn out as expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the days to exhibition counted down, the design project was\nstill work-in-progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quickly, I had to change plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If nothing at all, I was resolute on ensuring I attended the\nexhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I really needed it. \u201cBadly\u201d if you would permit my language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project had some hitches that bordered around delay in\nsupply of materials \u2013an expected occurrence in this line of business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had to plan to attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this time, ALONE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfavourable Weather<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The D-Day came and just as if not anything good comes easy;\nit started raining in the early hours of the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OH NO!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Am no salt, so I won\u2019t melt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I disregarded the continuous drips and took my leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(It\u2019s quite a challenge living in a new site area, if you\nknow what I mean).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wasn\u2019t going to drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wasn\u2019t with an umbrella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had packed a couple of stuffs since I would be staying\nover at my sister\u2019s place on the Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I deliberately did not want any extra burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burden 1:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traffic situation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google maps had revealed a wide stretch of red lines (which\nclearly shows heavy traffic).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burden 2:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Umbrella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a stock in trade for me to lose one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, I did not want any extra luggage apart from my backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to travel light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming out of the main road: It took quite a while before I\nfinally saw a neighbour\u2019s vehicle (actually driven by a mechanic that knew me \u2013\nwe had met the previous day in same vehicle when my neighbor gave me a ride\nhome).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was excited hoping I had been lucky to get a free ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, NO, my excitement was short-lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mechanic was on his way to his workshop (which was\npartially okay for me).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But worse still, he had to pick something he forgot from his\nhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could not afford this luxury of time. I had to drop at the\nnext junction to continue with my journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Danfo<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At about the same time, a rickety vehicle (you know our\nusual Lagos yellow buses, popularly called danfo.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had barely entered and settled down when I realized my\nheart had taken over my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vehicle I boarded was in shambles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The noise from its weak cringing engine was enough to send\nmigraine signals down one\u2019s cerebrals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a critical problem with the vehicle that was deliberately\nignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The clear signals were the continual ooze of fumes from the\nexhaust coupled with the noise emanating from the bus\u2019 engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who cares?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do o!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fumes from the exhaust found its way into the vehicle\nand affected me badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My eyes dripped tears. Breathing for me was getting very\nbad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, I had a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drop off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had some forces against me at the time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. It started raining heavily<\/li>
  2. Time was not on my side at all.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    I was forced to stick with my predicament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I just wanted to attend Propak\n2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So, I managed like most resilient Nigerian would \u2013suffering\nand smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The condition in the vehicle became worse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Multiple leakages from the roof and through the glass\nwindow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was indeed PATHETIC\n<\/strong>in every word of it (and in capital letters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    ARRIVAL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Summarily, I arrived event (not drenched in woes I had\nfaced, thank God) quite late into the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But at least, I met the first speaker in the\nseminar\/syndicate session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    My objective was clear: NETWORK.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I was able to quickly exchange contacts with a couple of\nprospects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Big players in the printing, packaging, publishing and\nplastic industries in the world were represented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Big\nnames like Heidelberg, FC Exports Group, Veevee Paper Products Limited,\nTechnology Global Services Limited, Tarabichi Printing and Packaging Nigeria\nLimited, Techblow Nigeria Limited, Exact Solutions, Vista, SkySAT etc were on\nground to display their wares, equipment and demonstrate to would-be buyers.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Organisers<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

    No doubt, the organizers did (always do) a great job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Afrocet Montgomery\u2019s Regional Director, George Pearson in\nhis words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cIt gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 7th<\/sup>\nedition of the largest international packaging, food processing, plastics,\nlabeling and print exhibition in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    On record, it\u2019s the largest show the organizers have ever\nrun representing over 200 brands participating from over 40 countries in Sub\nSaharan Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is a testament to Propak West Africa\u2019s success and the\nconfirmed demand from companies wanting a piece of the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The speakers at the event were top notch featuring senior\nrepresentatives from some of the most recognized companies in the continent of\nAfrica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The theme:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sustainability in Manufacturing: With an Increasing global\nShift in Plastic Waste and Responsible Packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    NETWORKING & RECONNECTING<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

    The few days I attended really proved informative, interactive\ninnovative and revealing in all facets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was a good platform to reconnect with professional\ncolleagues and friends in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    (Especially for some you\u2019ve not seen for a while).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Like Akin Oduwole<\/strong>\nof Technology Global Services Limited<\/em>\nsaid when I met him at the event: \u201cI love exhibitions, they connect long time\nfriends and colleagues you may never see for a very long while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I also had my fair share of reconnecting with \u2018long-time-no-see\u2019 professional colleagues and friends: Babatunde Afelumo<\/strong> of BQ Concept Ventures<\/em>; Abdulrasheed Afolabi<\/strong> lecturer at Yaba College of Technology; Sunday Ajibola<\/strong> of S-Squares Productions<\/em>; Temitope David<\/strong> of Pressfix Nigeria Limited; <\/em>Olumuyiwa Olufemi, John Onuegbulem<\/strong> of Heidelberg Nigeria Limited, <\/em>Fenton Curley <\/strong>of FC Exports Group, <\/em>Basit Odesanya<\/strong> of Basgaz Consults and <\/em>Ali Hassan<\/strong> of Laserline Diecutting International and <\/em>Joshua Okoh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It\nwon\u2019t end well, if I forget to mention new friends I made: Suhial Almousa<\/strong> of Tarabichi Printing & Packaging Nigeria\nLimited chiefly into production of packaging labels in reels; Fayoade Oluwatomilade<\/strong> of Veevee Paper Products\nLimited which are into manufacturing of corrugated cartons; <\/em>Shashi Ranjan Kumar<\/strong> of Techblow Nigeria Limited\n(with nine subsidiaries \u2013one of which is Shongai Technologies Limited into innovative\nflexible packaging solutions; <\/em>Chris Kpatuma of Truvia Media<\/strong> an IT-firmand  <\/em>Tade Adegbite<\/strong> of Eagle Packaging Limited.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The event was packed full to the brim with exhibitors,\nvisitors, enthusiast and of course, the organizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    CONVERT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    With my sister at a relaxation spot close to the beautiful seaside view beside LandMark Centre, Lekki Lagos, Nigeria venue of PROPAK 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    I happen to convince my sister to attend even if she was\nentirely new to the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I felt she could be inspired to invest if she sees\nindustry\u2019s creative approaches and demonstration in display at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    GUESS WHAT?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I succeeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    On day two, she followed me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    (I got a convert and I think I deserve a Propak award, LOL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There will always be something to take away at such BIG event\nthat features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Seminars, symposiums, workshops and syndicate\nsessions<\/li>
    2. Opportunity to network with high profile\nindividuals and professional bodies.<\/li>
    3. Inspiration for prospects to invest in the\nindustry on seeing practical live demonstrations of processes and machines in\nfull operation for production.<\/li>
    4. Enjoying beautiful, natural seaside scenery and other\nside attractions.<\/li>
    5. And lots more.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      CONCLUSION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Though I could not make the last day and grand finale of\nevent, I must say I gained a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I want to seize this very rare opportunity to specially\nthank the organizers, sponsors, partners, exhibitors and even visitors (plus my\nsister for agreeing to come) for a great, awesome, worthwhile and successful\nexhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
