Analyzing 4 Nigerian State Website Design

I’m fascinated
Putting these websites side by side without analysis or disregarding SEO, I would be carried away by Osun state government’s website. nigerian-state-website-designThe reason is quite clear: it is unique in design with a powerful image filling the whole background of the home page. Ordinarily, one would assume that the background image would be a disadvantage as there are tendencies that it may load slower than necessary which would naturally put off users, the reverse was the case. When it came to speed score, Oyo state’s website carried the day with a high speed score of 84 compared to my preferred Osun State web design. How wrong can one be when it comes to visual analysis with relation to SEO/online marketability of your website. Sometimes sticking to traditions could work abi.
Let’s take a little time to focus our search beam on these state’s website:

oyo-state-nigeria-website-designOYO STATE WEBSITE DESIGN (www.oyostate.gov.ng)
CONCEPT:
What was the key concept for the website in the first place you’d ask. Well that would depend on the initial goal the website was designed for but then what can we see here? On the banner section of the website, as captured on the screen shot, we see that the information projects the current happenings in the state. Just after, we have the state governor’s welcome address and at the right side we have a side bar that displays special announcements etc.

DESIGN
Layout
There is nothing really jazzy about the site per se because the layout of the website seems very conventional with placement of elements in quite traditional locations.

Color
Apart from the gradient orange background on the banner section, it is clear that color usage for the home page was quite minimal. The designer did not make an attempt at using the whole colors of the state’s  logo located at the top left side of the header section of the website (I had a client that gave me more than five colors to use for a website design proposal).

Typography:
Futura seems to be the major font used with different variations.

Image Usage
Quite common with most websites, the image seems a bit distorted in the banner area. I would have preferred a closer shot of the governors photograph or better still the photo used would have been increased, in the right proportions, to make it bolder n the containing box.

ONLINE MARKETABILITY
Oyo state government’s website tops the list with an estimated 44% traffic score; 85% total on SEO; 84% speed score and 32% social share score –making the website the most marketable among the pack.

CONCEPT:
There is a big bold emphasis on the beautiful scenery from an ariel view on the header section of the state. This naturally projects the state as a commercial heartbeat. This photograph was taken right in the heart of Lagos. What strikes you when you first land this home page of the website? The photograph abi? What then is your opinion of it?

DESIGN
Layout
The layout comes with a three-column design emphasizing the “clip of the moment.” On the first column as we had in Oyo state, the governor’s photograph appears, though much bolder and appropriate within the containing frame.

Color:
There is an overwhelming deep blue background (looking carefully, it seems to be a bitmap) which was also used in the navigation area –that seemed to be the only dominant colour used here bearing in mind that the state’s logo has 4 dominant solid colours (apart from the bitmap image).

Typography:
Futura again is used here –I was wondering if the designer was the same person (but I didn’t take time to check sha)

Image Usage
I’m really fascinated by the big bold use of the image on the header section. The designer must be very daring to have chosen to take that step, against all odds I guess, to use such photograph. The choice of the photograph and the angle of the shot is quite awesome. From the little I could see here, making reference of course to the image we have before us, there seems to be no distortion whatsoever of the images used here. Additionally, the governor’s photograph was properly used.

ONLINE MARKETABILITY
The “Centre of Excellence” website is the second on the list with an estimated 57% traffic score; 66% total on SEO; 65% speed score and 33% social share score.

ogun-state-nigeria-website-designOGUN STATE WEBSITE DESIGN (www.ogunstate.gov.ng)
CONCEPT:
The concept behind the website is bold on projecting current news of what the state is doing –kind of newsy style I guess.

DESIGN
Layout
The layout is quite traditional with a 3-column based style having the one column bigger than the other two to purposefully project emphasis.

Color:
Chartereuse is the predominant colour used here and the subtle feel of green and combination of yellow on white background seems to be easy and pleasant on the eye.

Typography:
Traditional, or better still our conventional Arial and Futura were the major fonts used here.

Image Usage:
The photographs used here were in the very right proportions but the only growse I have is the governor’s photograph facing outside the page instead of inside i.e. to your right instead of left.

ONLINE MARKETABILITY
For now, I guess I can say my state (even if it’s not my state of origin though) since I live here and it’s also where my office is located for now, government’s website is the third (thank God say no be last sha!) with an estimated 40% traffic score; 70% total on SEO; 82% speed score and 31% social share score.

osun-state-nigeria-website-designOSUN STATE WEBSITE DESIGN (www.ogun.gov.ng)
CONCEPT:
This is about the people. The concept puts the people in the very fore amidst a very rich green natural  vegetation. This is about people and appreciation of nature. Even the governor’s image is not that conspicuous when compared to other state government’s website. What does it tell you? The governor is not as important as the people abi? Well draw up your own interpretation and let me hear from you.

DESIGN
Layout
The beautiful layout seeks first to project the achievements of the state; inform you about current happening and lastly, just like the biblical servant-leader, “The Ogbeni” governor is introduced with a very small photograph of his.

Color:
Colour is predominantly nature based and white is used with a little shadow to enhance contrast on the natural background.

Typography:
Futura is the dominant  font used here.

Image Usage:
Photography here is key. The bold use of a single image is quite inspiring and also serves the concept right. Neither the main background image nor the small “Ogbeni” picture were distorted.

ONLINE MARKETABILITY
The website is the fourth on the list (I don’t want to say last please) with an estimated 47% traffic score; 51% total on SEO; 60% speed score and 35% social share score.

Ordinarily this is my most preferred, in terms of concept, design but other parameters just had to be considered.
